Top 5 Factors to Keep in Mind for the Traffic Count Season

Traffic engineers are right in the middle of the spring count traffic season and working on numerous transportation projects. Here are 5 factors that should be kept in mind for this count season.

National Holidays and Vacation Time

Within North America, there will be a few national holidays as well as summer vacations. This has a direct impact on traffic volumes which can skew traffic volumes significantly. According to a study on traffic volumes by the Institute of Transportation Engineers, national holidays and school not being in session can reduce traffic volumes by up to 35%. If possible, these situations should be avoided and if not possible, should be appropriately factored into any results or reports.

Weather

With cooler temperatures still affecting the spring season, this can drastically change the weather each week. Unforeseen thunderstorms, downpours, excessive winds and hail can interrupt manual traffic data collection. Utilizing Miovision’s traffic data collection, the Scout, allows you to collect accurate traffic data regardless of weather and ensures you can meet your project deadlines.

Budget

June is the end of fiscal year for many government agencies. This is a great time to squeeze in additional traffic data collection projects to use up any remaining budget as well as plan for the following fiscal year.

Renting Units

The traffic count season can have data collection projects of varying size. For larger projects that exceed your current equipment capabilities, Miovision provides the ability to rent our Scout data collection equipment. For additional rental information, view our rental program page.

Safety

Having appropriate safety measures is always a priority for transportation organizations and agencies. Taking the time to follow process protocols may be time consuming or seem unnecessary, but can ensure the safety of transportation professionals, especially those in the road ways. National Work Zone Awareness Week recently passed which emphasized safety for work zones.

Signal Timing Research Initiative

In April, we contacted government agencies to participate in our first peer-driven research initiative about signal timing. We received an overwhelming response and would like to thank everyone who provided their input.

Since we had so much great feedback, we’ll be compiling this information and will provide a report later on this month.

Blog Article: Proven Safety Countermeasures

In 2008, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) created a document outlining 9 safety countermeasures which utilize a data driven approach to reduce serious injuries and fatalities on American highways. Based on the most recent research, the FHWA updated the safety countermeasures in January 2012.

This week’s blog, part one of two, we will review the first five safety countermeasures.
