Case Study – Miovision’s Rental Plan in Action
Printable Version »
Scenario
As part of a larger project, HDR | iTRANS won a signal retiming and coordination improvement project for Thickwood Boulevard and Confederation Way, two arterial roads for the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo in Alberta, Canada. To accomplish the signal retiming portion of the project HDR | iTRANS required up-to-date and accurate turning movement counts at 15 intersections.
Challenges
“We were able to get equipment quickly and complete the project faster, more accurately, and at a lower cost than would have been possible with traditional methods.”
Ron Whitelock
Senior Project Manager, HDR | iTRANS
There were several challenges faced on this project. The first major challenge was the distance between the survey sites and the HDR iTRANS office coordinating the project. The study was taking place in Fort McMurray, Alberta while the HDR | iTRANS office was located 2650 km (1650 miles) away in Richmond Hill, Ontario.
The second challenge was the timeline. The project was started in the late fall and it was a requirement to have the data and retiming done before winter weather affected the traffic flow. To find, hire, and train data collectors before this deadline would have taken a significant amount of time and management effort.
Finally, there was a requirement for 14 hour counting periods. Counts this long would have put a single counter under considerable strain or required the training, hiring, and coordination of twice as many staff. With either option, long manual counts put data accuracy at risk.
Solution
“Miovision was extremely responsive to the needs of our project.”
Ron Whitelock
Senior Project Manager, HDR | iTRANS
Based on past experience with Miovision’s system for Automated Turning Movement Counts, HDR | iTRANS knew that Miovision was an ideal solution for this project.
With Miovision’s Rental program, HDR | iTRANS was able to rent the 4 Video Collection Units (VCUs) needed and had them shipped directly to the clients location. The system is easy enough to use that city staff were quickly trained on how to deploy the VCU to collect video and upload the video to Miovision. Thanks to Miovision’s TrafficDataOnline portal, HDR | iTRANS was able access the traffic data directly from their office.
The Miovision VCU can record for up to 24 hours with the built-in battery and up to 72 hours with the optional power pack. This allowed HDR | iTRANS to easily do 14 hour counts
without worrying about fatigued counters, shift changes, or data accuracy. Miovision is able to provide consistent and verifiably accurate turning movement counts over long counting periods.
Additionally, by renting the equipment HDR | iTRANS was able to not only augment their counting capabilities they were able to easily pass on all costs to the client.
