Our Video Analysis Software (VAS) is the true heart of our Automated Turning Movement Count system - it is the 'brains' or intelligence that automates the counting and classification of vehicles. Using patented computer vision techniques, VAS accurately tracks vehicles from when they enter a scene to when they leave it, recording each vehicle path and each vehicle's classification. VAS can be used for the following types of counts:

• Turning Movement Counts (up to 8-legged intersections)
• Highway Counts (up to 5 lanes per direction)
• Roundabouts
• Midblock Counts (when it's too dangerous to run road-tubes)
  

After you upload your traffic video to our secure data center and it's configured, the software automatically interprets the video frame by frame, tracking all the vehicle movements according to the type of study being done (e.g. intersection, roundabout, etc.) as well as determining its classification (up to 4 classes: 2-wheeled, car, medium-truck, heavy-truck) and counting pedestrians.

Better than Human?
VAS has an accuracy rate higher of at least 95% - higher than the typical accuracy of manual data collectors. Human collectors become fatigued, bored, and must pause for certain activities (e.g. washroom breaks, distractions, etc). Additionally, a human data collector only has a few seconds to correctly identify a vehicle movement and classification- often not enough time for large, busy intersections or roundabouts. VAS looks at the video frame-by-frame, so it never gets overwhelmed by traffic volume or other external distractions. In fact, busy intersections and roundabouts that normally would require 2 or 4 collectors to study only require one video file and VAS.

The World's First Truly Auditable Counting Technology
Since you'll have a video record of the count, you can always compare the accuracy of VAS to a manual count done on the same video. In fact, the idea that VAS returns verifiable results makes it the very first counting technology that you can audit. Road-tubes, counting boards, radar units - you can't be sure that these technologies 'get it right' because you can't check the count after the fact. With our system, you can always check the accuracy of any count you do.
