Sharing the Road with Cyclists

Over the past few years, there has been more pressure from cyclists demanding that drivers share the road. Community groups are getting the attention of public agencies to include cyclist-focused initiatives in urban areas.

What does this mean for current traffic conditions and drivers? Updating existing infrastructure to include cyclists is a process and won’t impact drivers and traffic in the short term. Urban cities that do implement these changes will go through a modal shift where cyclists will be part of a blended transportation infrastructure.

A Road Sign-less Place with Shared Space

Shared Space intentionally strips away traffic control devices in order to place the responsibility back onto the driver/cyclist/pedestrian to interact with their fellow citizens in order to navigate the space. The drivers, pedestrians and cyclists are forced to make eye contact with each other, rather than watching the signs and expecting the right-of-way as an isolated commuter.

The bike gets a boost in Toronto and becomes street art all in the same week!

Kudos to Councillor Denzil Minnan-Wong in Toronto who is championing new bike lanes on five major downtown streets. With these new bike lanes, hopefully none of us will end up like Casey Neistat! (YouTube)
In ironically related news, Toronto makes the bike a new public art installation! What a cool way to accept the bike as a viable form of transportation in the city core.
