Shared Space intentionally strips away traffic control devices in order to place the responsibility back onto the driver/cyclist/pedestrian to interact with their fellow citizens in order to navigate the space. The drivers, pedestrians and cyclists are forced to make eye contact with each other, rather than watching the signs and expecting the right-of-way as an isolated commuter.

What does this mean for current traffic conditions and drivers? Updating existing infrastructure to include cyclists is a process and won’t impact drivers and traffic in the short term.
